Thandolwethu’s guide to plus-size fashion
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Thandolwethu shares her style tips for women with fuller
figures.
Radio personality Thandolwethu describes her style as “tomboy/boho chic”.
While the East Coast Urban presenter enjoys dressing up, she doesn’t take her fashion too seriously.
But that doesn’t stop people from judging her appearance. Thandolwethu says she is often described as the “fat one”.
“As a child other kids made fun of me because of my weight. In adulthood, you have society who overlook everything you do. For instance, when people ask, ‘who is Thandolwethu, they will say the fat one’.”
Thandolwethu says women like body positive activist Lesego ‘Thickleeyonce’ Legobane have made plus-size girls feel good about themselves.
“Women like her are flaunting their curves which is good for the little girl who thinks there is something wrong with her because she doesn't look like the models in the magazines. I also love how Thickleeyonce wears clothes that you would not think a fuller figured woman could like a body con dresses.”

Fat shaming has become the norm on social media, but Thandolwethu doesn’t let people’s opinions influence her fashion choices.
“People can only make you feel as bad as you allow them to make you feel. If you do not like the way that you look then change it! But if you love what you are working with (curves) your confidence will soar and the haters cannot hate!”
When the East Coast Urban presenter does not know what to wear, her go-to outfit is a long black maxi dress.
Thando lives by two fashion rules:
1. Dress for your size
She says wearing “something that does not fit you” is a big fashion no-no.
2. Flaunt your assets
“If you have nice legs-show them! If you have a great cleavage, show the girls off.”
More Fashion tips for plus size women
- Know your body type: Dressing for your shape can take you from drab to fab in minutes. The hourglass and pear are common shapes for plus size women.
- Choose dark colours: If you are having an off day and want to hide some lumps and bumps, wearing dark coloured clothes like black jeans can make you look slimmer.
- Avoid horizontal stripes: Clothes with horizontal stripes can make you look wider than you actually are.
- Know your bra size: Wearing well-fitted undergarments will not only ensure your clothes fall on your body seamlessly but they can also help prevent unwanted bulges.
