#PoopGate: How comfortable are you around your partner?
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
From one woman being hospitalised for holding in her gas, to another woman's husband refusing to forgive her for a “absolutely revolting” fart - flatulence is no laughing matter for some couples.
Is it okay to pass gas in front of your partner or poop with the door open? While some couples have no problem "letting it rip" in front of each other, many find the idea revolting.
The topic has been up for discussion for many years, but the debate rages on in 2023.
Earlier this year, a woman named Sam revealed that her husband finds it "gross" when people burp or fart in front of others. Because he felt so strongly about the matter, she decided to go to the bathroom to pass gas whenever she needed to.

She managed to "hide" her farts from her husband for nine years until one fateful night after a delicious pizza dinner.
"A few weeks ago as I started to drift off to sleep, my guard was down and out came the post-pizza gasses from that evening’s dinner. Yep, the worst flatulence scenario happened, I farted, and it wasn’t a small or inoffensive smelling one either. In fact, it was probably one I’d be embarrassed about even if I was alone in the toilet," she told Kidspot readers.
Her husband was so disgusted he refused to forgive her! "Farting is the most unladylike thing a woman can do, especially in front of her husband,” he told her.
One woman was hospitalised last year after refusing to pass gas in front of her partner. Yes, an "accumulation of trapped farts" resulted in Viviane de Queiroz Pereira being rushed to the hospital.
She revealed on Instagram that she woke up with severe stomach cramps because she was holding in her gas.
"Girls, don’t be ashamed to fart in front of your guy, because what’s really embarrassing is not letting your guy sleep because you’re in discomfort, going to hospital with your guy, and the diagnosis being “trapped farts”. From now on, I’m letting them rip," the Brazilian told her followers.

Women are a lot more embarrassed than men about releasing such fumes in front of their partners. But not all couples are disgusted by flatulence.
Many men find the idea quite funny, with some going as far as making cakes to celebrate their girlfriend's farts.
A cake baker named Greg Mason revealed that one of his clients ordered a "fart cake" after his girlfriend passed gas for the first time in two years.
The man wanted to celebrate the milestone.
"He was so proud of her. I mean, how can you not pass gas in front of your partner for two years? So, he thought it would be funny to get her a cake to surprise her with to document this monumental occasion," Greg said.

Some couples are even comfortable pooping with their partner in the bathroom. But that is a story for another day.
So why is passing gas in front of your partner such a big deal? It's understandable if you don't want to do it in front of complete strangers in public but inside your own home!
Especially when you consider that both men and women can pass gas up to 20 times per day, according to Women's Health.
Holistic Life Coach and Certified Trauma Support Specialist, Amy Fielder, took to Twitter recently to discuss what she thought about the notion that you should never fart in front of your partner.
"To be fair, it’s rare people are deliberately walking around trying to do this," she tweeted.
Amy added that it really just depends on personal boundaries.
"If this person is going to be your life partner, that comes with all of you and respects your unique individual boundaries. So this isn’t so much a black/white rule as it is more something that pertains to personal boundaries. Which [obviously] vary per person and relationship."
