High rate of maternal mortality

The World Health Organization reports that maternal mortality is high and the deaths can be reduced.
Maternal mortality is reportedly high.
According to the World Health Organization, thousands of women are dying due to maternal mortality, which refers to deaths caused by complications from pregnancy or childbirth.
In a report published on 26 April, a maternal death occurred almost every two minutes in 2020.
The top causes of maternal mortality
The organisation states the major complications that account for nearly 75% of all maternal deaths are:
severe bleeding (mostly bleeding after childbirth);
infections (usually after childbirth);
high blood pressure during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia);
complications from delivery; and
unsafe abortion.

To prevent these deaths, women are advised to:
- Seek high-quality care in pregnancy, and during and after childbirth.
- Practice good hygiene to avoid infection.
- Live a healthy lifestyle.
- Do not skip monthly check-ups at clinics or with your gynecologist.
