Endometriosis: A condition that can cause pain during sexual intercourse

We look at the symptoms and treatment of the endometriosis condition.

At least 10% (190-million) of reproductive age women and girls globally suffer from endometriosis, reports the World Health Organization.
Sadly, there is no way a woman can prevent endometriosis.
This health condition occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (womb) grows outside of the uterus, for instance the ovaries, fallopian tubes, tissues that hold the uterus in place, and outer surface of the uterus, states Women's Health website.

Symptoms
Women who suffer from the condition will experience:
- Painful periods
- Bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Painful bowel movements and/or urination
- Stomach (digestive) problems
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Abdominal bloating
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Depression/ anxiety
-Infertility.
Treatment
There is currently no cure or treatment of endometriosis. Health practitioners will give treatment aimed at controlling symptoms. Patients will either be given medication and some might undergo surgery.
