Breast milk ice cream is the latest trend in desserts

Ice cream comes in many flavours: vanilla, chocolate, caramel, cookies and cream, and, uhm, breast milk.

Everyone loves ice cream, but would you try a scoop of breast milk ice cream?

An American company hopes the answer is "yes" because it is about to launch a breast-milk-flavoured ice cream.

It seems like an odd choice for a frozen dairy dessert, but many of us have tried breast milk at some point.

Well, we were babies and can't remember what it tastes like.

The Frida company, which started in Sweden, is bringing back nostalgia, whether you like it or not, with a new range of breast milk ice cream.

The company specialises in baby, mom and fertility products but has decided to try something different.

Its new breast milk ice cream is due in nine months!

"Baby and postpartum products were just the appetiser. Now it's time for dessert. Breast Milk Ice Cream is our sweetest drop yet," Frida said.

We don't know whether to be excited or scared.

Frida made the announcement last week, a few days before April Fool's Day, which makes us a bit sceptical.

So far, it seems legit. According to a video shared on the company's social media pages, the breast milk ice cream will have the same benefits as a mother's liquid gold.

"We're creating a frozen treat that satisfies your late-night cravings and fuels your body the way that breast milk and formula fuel a baby's."

The ice cream is said to be "packed with similar nutrients to breast milk and formula, including Omega 3s for brain power, energy-boosting lactose, protein, vitamins and minerals".

Frida says the breast milk ice cream tastes sweet and nutty, with a hint of salt.

We are not 100% sold on the idea, but we might sign the pre-order form to get our hands on some.

Frida is not the first company to venture into breast milk ice cream. In 2011, the Icecreamists shop in London caused a frenzy when it started serving "Baby Gaga" ice cream.

It used breast milk from 15 women to make its first batch, which quickly sold out despite its £14 (about R315) price tag. According to NPR, the milk "was screened in line with hospital/blood donor requirements".

If Frida truly is launching a breast milk-flavoured ice cream, it is a genius way to introduce new customers to the brand.

Honestly, we're surprised Goop and Gwyneth Paltrow, who brought us the "This Smells Like My Vagina" candle, hadn't come up with this idea before.
