For the last 100 years, the ABH has helped countless people. The home was inspired by one of its founding fathers, Mr DG Satyadeva as he witnessed a police officer assaulting a homeless old man for taking shelter overnight in a public toilet. Deeply distressed by this incident, Mr Satyadeva, Mr Nayanah Rajh and Mr SL Singh, resolved to provide a home for the vulnerable. Soon after, the ABH was born. The ABH is commemorating its centenary this year.

The ABH is a national Non-Profit Organisation and it attributes its success to support from the community, which has always shown its faith in the home.

Amidst a global pandemic, the ABH’s need to help the less fortunate has not abated. In the face of the second wave of the pandemic, the ABH team, Matron Harilal and the home’s dedicated frontline healthcare workers, have implemented strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure that the pandemic isn’t easily spread to the ABH’s 700 residents and 400 staff.

The ABH encourages corporates and individuals to donate to the home before the tax year ends. Your donation to the home can be claimed against your taxable income and the ABH will issue Section 18A Certificates.

Your contribution will help the home with much-needed resources such as hand sanitisers, masks, protective suits, and fogging of their headquarters (80 Arena Park Drive, Chatsworth).

Naren Pattundeen, CEO of the ABH, said: “We have been fortunate enough to be one of the few homes that have survived 100 years. We continue to provide support to the aged, frail, physically and mentally challenged, abused women and children. This year, after deducting government subsidies, we have a gross deficit of R917,000 per month. A further sum of R400,000 per month is generated from rentals and other business income. That leaves a remaining R517,000 each month to be raised through donations."
