KZN roads, bridges take a pounding amid heavy rains, floods

A Red Level 10 warning has been issued for parts of KZN by the South African Weather Service.

It’s the highest possible warning issued by the weather bureau. 

Several roads, including key entrance routes, have been flooded, while some bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged. 

KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said 190 people were evacuated from Tehuis to SJ Smith Hall on Saturday evening.

“We are evacuating people from Othongathi Waterways with the help of SANDF,” he said in an update on the floods. 

“We urge communities living near river banks to monitor the rivers and evacuate immediately if they notice the river rising. We urge anyone in risk zones at the moment to evacuate.”  

Zikalala said the inclement weather is expected to move to the northern parts of the province on Sunday.

“We are also being warned about snowfall and that this inclement weather will from tomorrow move towards the north coast affecting areas such as Richards Bay, Empangeni and others.  

“We are monitoring the situation on the M7 and advise everyone to delay travelling on the roads at the moment.”
