That's been confirmed by the South African Weather Service.

Forecaster Julius Mahlangu says over 300 millimetres of rain was recorded in Virginia in Durban - double what the area normally receives.

He says several other areas also received more than double the maximum rainfall recorded in previous record years.

Mahlangu says its typical for the weather conditions like the cut-off low pressure system experienced on Monday to bring devastating downpours..

“In October 2017 we had a similar system, which was a cuts-off low which dropped quite a lot of rain over the province of KZN. We also saw devastating floods over that period as a result of this kind of weather system.”
