Govt on high alert as heavy rains hit KZN again
Updated | By Martine van der Walt Ehlers
The Department of Cooperative Governance says evacuations have already taken place in KwaZulu-Natal amid the heavy rains.
Government's disaster management committee met on Saturday after the South African Weather Services issued a Level 10 weather warning for parts of the province.
It is the highest weather warning possible.
In some parts of KZN, water levels on the roads and rivers reached dangerously high levels and are projected to continue to rise.
The heavy rains are expected to ease by Monday.
Snow warnings have also been issued for some parts of the province.

"The current rains are compounding an already dire situation due to the recent floods, especially in KZN province, wherein the ground is still saturated and can therefore easily be flooded," says the department's Lungi Mtshali.
"Government, through the departments such as Social Development, Defence Force, South African Police Service, and other social partners are working with disaster management teams across the province to monitor the high-risk areas, determine the extent and level of risk, evaluate damages where they exist and provide immediate relief to needy communities.
"Government is concerned about the impact that these rains are likely to have on communities." Mtshali says people are urged to remain indoors for the duration of the rains.ETHEKWINI HEAVY RAINS UPDATE
