Government issues update on rumours of Shongweni Dam Wall collapsing
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Is it true or is it false news?
There have been several reports around KZN of the Shongweni Dam Wall collapsing.
Social media has been abuzz as the news started circulating online.
In response to this and in order to de-escalate the situation, government has issued the statement as follows:
#KZNFloods | The Department would like to assure people that Shongweni Dam has not collapsed. Two of the ten gates that have fused are designed to fail during extreme floods. This is a safety measure not dam failure.@Senzo_Mchunu_ pic.twitter.com/IKAyGKwL75

We would like to reiterate that Shongweni Dam has not collapsed. The dam is equipped with 10 Hydroplus fuse gates which are designed to "tip" and fail in sequence to avoid catastrophic failure of the entire dam. #KZNFlooding pic.twitter.com/6aBaBuBxxd
