KZN picnic hotspots: TC Robertson Nature Reserve
Updated | By Sponsored by Tourism KwaZulu-Natal
TC Robertson Nature Reserve is a great spot for picnics, braais, and hikes.
Looking for a change of scenery this holiday season? TC Robertson Nature Reserve is the perfect spot to have a picnic with your family.
TC Robertson Nature Reserve, which is located on the outskirts of Scottburgh, has an interesting history. Community members converted that land into a nature reserve in the 1980s.
The reserve is named after South African ecologist and conservationist, Dr TC Robertson.
There are several reasons why the reserve is a picnic hotspot for both locals and out-of-towners.
It’s situated on the south bank of the Mpambanyoni River, which makes for a charming picnic location.
TC Robertson is also home to a wide variety of birds. The birdwatching experience begins from the moment you enter the reserve.
Some of the birds you could spot include the Black Cuckooshrike, Golden-rumped Tinker Barbet, African Fish Eagle, kingfishers, and more.
Start off your morning at TC Robertson Nature Reserve with a hike on one of its many trails. The reserve is surrounded by over 80 species of trees. If you visit during spring, you will be surrounded by beautiful wildflowers.
The reserve is also home to mongoose and small buck.
After exploring the area, you can enjoy a picnic at one of the picnic spots. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food. There is also a braai area.
TC Robertson Nature Reserve is not only great for picnics and braais. It makes the perfect venue for wedding functions and birthday parties.
As a bonus, the reserve is just a 10-minute walk away from the breach. Many beachgoers venture to the reserve on days when it is too windy for a swim.
You will need to pay a small entrance fee to enter the reserve. Don’t forget to pack your walking shoes and sunscreen!
