Not only does it give coffee lovers a boost of energy when they need it most, but it also puts a smile on their face.

Here’s a look at some of the best coffee farms in the province.

Beaver Creek Coffee (add location)

Beaver Creek is known as the Disneyland for coffee people. The family behind the coffee estate and coffee company has been growing, harvesting, producing, roasting and selling coffee since 1984. Three generations of the family have delivered the freshest Arabica coffee to homes and offices all over South Africa. The Beaver Creek farm is not only a great place for coffee lovers, but entire families have been known to have a fun day out.

Thornton Coffee

Thornton Coffee opened its doors in 1979. The family started as sugar cane farmers on Neethling Estate, before venturing into the world of coffee. Granny Min roasted and packaged the produce before her daughter-in-law, Debbie Neethling took over the reins. Debbie’s daughter Lauren is now in charge, but the master roaster still keeps a close eye on quality control at the farm, which is situated in the Oribi Gorge area, west of Port Shepstone.

Terbodore Coffee Roasters

The Terbodore coffee roastery started from humble beginnings. The owners operated out of a garden shed and garage during their early days.  The Midlands roastery, which began in 2004, is currently situated on a farm in Curry’s Post. The family’s first customers were restaurant and accommodation owners in their community. But that soon changed as word got out about their delicious Terbodore country blend.  The family decided to open a restaurant at the roastery so coffee lovers all over KZN and SA could indulge in the defined flavours of their coffee.

 Assagay Coffee Farm

When Rick James bought a seven-acre smallholding in Assagay Valley in 1991 he had no idea he would one day be growing one of the most popular coffee beans in South Africa. He had dreams of becoming a poultry farmer, but fate had other plans. Instead of cutting down the neglected coffee trees on the smallholding, he decided to bring them back to life. There are currently around 30 000 trees planted on the Harrison Valley Estate.

The Assagay Coffee Farm, which uses only organic fertilizers and foliar sprays in the farming of their 100% Pure Arabica coffee, offers guided farm tours. Coffee lovers will learn about the manufacturing process from seed to shelf.
