KZN flood toll rises to 51
The death toll in KwaZulu-Natal floods has sharply increased from 33 to 51 after the Easter Weekend storms.
KwaZulu-Natal's Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson Lennox Mabaso says "MEC Nomusa Dube- Ncube has confirmed that the death toll has risen to 51."
Mabaso adds that President Cyril Ramaphosa has cut short his working visit to Egypt and will land in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) later this morning.
"He is going to travel to various areas of the province and he's going to be lightening the burden on the province by ensuring that people are going to be provided with all the care and support that they need," adds Mabaso.
Meanwhile, weather SA Forecaster, Edward Ellenburg, says there are no rains expected in the province on Wednesday morning.
"Most of the rain has cleared up, but we do expect again some scatter showers and thundershowers to return from the afternoon," says Ellenburg.
Ellenburg says they are expecting the storms to clear over the KwaZulu-Natal region by Thursday morning.
He adds however that more severe thunderstorms are expected over the Eastern Cape coastline.
"We do have a watch out for severe thunderstorms between Port St Johns and Port Albert."
