The first step to happiness is loving yourself.
Self-love is one of the most important traits because it can affect how you perceive yourself, other people and it could also play a part in how you make certain decisions in your life.
Self-love is also important as it affects the type of people you allow in your life. It's so important as individuals to be more loving to ourselves, especially on your worst days when you can sometimes slip into believing you aren't deserving of love.
It includes being more kind to yourself and allowing your imperfections and flaws to define you as a normal being rather than take from your confidence and leave you feeling low on energy.

For many years self-love has been a hard conversation and has been included with some of the other topics which are deemed as a taboo in society.
However, the Sympathy Project has made things easier by opening up a great platform and safe space for people to engage with each other.
The project allows likeminded individuals to come together and connect by having these constructive discussions. It also gives people the opportunity to be heard because sometimes all people want is to be heard.
The platform is a great place to listen to individuals share their stories or even better, YOU could share your own story as well.

Many people know the term but struggle to practice it.
It's very easy and almost instant to tell someone to 'just love yourself' because you may not understand how deep their lack of self-love is or how it originates, so the next time you feel the urge to say these words rather give them some of the suggestions below:
- Encourage them to show kindness to themselves.
- Encourage them to find a hobby that makes them happy and keeps them occupied.
- Remind them that they are human and its okay to go through human experiences.
- Nobody is perfect and no one should ever feel the need to show perfection.
- Encourage them to surround themselves with positive people who have a positive outlook on life.
- Encourage them to practice mindfulness.
- A progress journal is nice to have as it shows you how you're doing with your self-love journey.
