Snowfall in the Drakensberg: Where to find it
Updated | By East Coast Radio
With reports of snow in KwaZulu-Natal, many locals are looking for ways to explore it.

The Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal offer a unique winter experience, with certain peaks receiving a decent dusting of snow.
If you're looking to chase snowfall in KZN, here are the top spots to visit:
Mnweni and the Northern Drakensberg
This lesser-developed region is colder and more remote, with high cliffs and open ridges that catch snow when the weather turns.
Giants Castle area
The Giants Castle section of the Drakensberg often gets snow on its upper ridges, with peaks rising over 3,000 metres.

Sani Pass and the Border Peaks
At over 2,800 metres above sea level, Sani Pass and the surrounding peaks are some of the snowiest in the Drakensberg. The road up to the Sani Mountain Lodge often becomes impassable during heavier snowfall.
Cathedral Peak and Champagne Castle
These popular hiking and climbing areas see regular snowfall, though less than Sani Pass or Giants Castle.

When to go
The snow season in the Drakensberg generally runs from June to August, with the best chances after cold fronts move up from the south-west.
However, be cautious of icy roads and weather conditions, which can be dangerous during snowfall.
Safety in snow
Before heading out, check the weather forecast and road conditions.
Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready and consider hiring a 4x4 or guide if you're not experienced in driving on snowy roads.
Always prioritise your safety and the safety of others.
