are the perfect environment for a bonding session with your mom.
Going for a walk with a loved one has more benefits than just improving your physical health.
It’s a great way to catch up with family and friends in an environment free of distractions, such as your phone and other gadgets.
Studies have also shown than a one-hour walk in nature is great for your mental health.
Not only can it help lower your stress levels but according to a report in the Natural Library of Medicine, short walks in blue space environments - which are located near bodies of water - can improve your mood.
With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, May 14, now is the perfect time to bond with the special woman in your life while taking a leisurely stroll in nature.

Here are five of the best walks in Durban that you can do with your mom:
Coedmore Castle: Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve
Many people might not know this, but Durban is home to its very own castle. Coedmore Castle in the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve is known as the city’s ‘Castle Lite’. It might not be as big as Buckingham Palace, but the castle makes for a beautiful site for your next walking or hiking trail. Access to the actual castle is reportedly limited, but you can take in its beauty while you enjoy a walk with your mother on the Kenneth Stainbank Trail Run.
Never leave the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve without seeing the beautiful Coedmore Castle also known as ‘Castle Lite’ the castle is situated at the centre of the reserve. It was built in 1875.

The Big Walk: Durban’s Promenade
It’s back! KZN’s much-loved Big Walk is making a big comeback in 2023 and we couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy a walk with loved ones. Surprise your mother with tickets for the event this Mother’s Day. You won’t regret it! The Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk, which is taking place on Sunday, June 18, aims to bring families and friends together to create memorable experiences. The walk will start at uShaka, continue past Suncoast, and end at Moses Mabhida (People's Park). There’s also a choice between the 5km and 10km routes. Tickets can be purchased online HERE.

Burman Bush Nature Reserve
Located in the centre of Morningside, the Burman Bush Nature Reserve is smaller than other reserves, but it is the perfect place for nature lovers. Its three main trails take visitors on 500m, 1km, and 2km routes. A viewing platform allows visitors to enjoy great views of Umgeni River and the ocean.
Westville Eco Trail
The Westville Eco Trail is suitable for both young and old. It’s the best location for a Sunday stroll. It has become a popular trail for walkers, hikers, and Mountain Bikers. You’ll feel like you are on a mini adventure as walk through the forest and take in its beautiful fauna. Enjoy the calming sounds of streams, birds chirping, and fellow walkers making their way along the trail.

Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve
The Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve remains a favourite with Durbanites. Its trails and surroundings make the perfect backdrop for Instagram-worthy pictures. From the beautiful mangrove trees and picturesque sand dunes to its elevated boardwalk, this 76-hectare reserve is a walker’s paradise.
