Discover an all-new art & design world in Durban

Prepare to experience something
completely new and out-of-this-world at the Discover Durban Design exhibition,
hosted by the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show, from the 28th
June – 7th July at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
Centred around the theme, Afrofutura and under the careful curation of renowned Durban creative, Claire Clark and KZNSA Gallery’s Angela Shaw, the exhibition will bring original work by talented local artists, designers, creators and makers from all over KZN to centre stage and take visitors on an experiential journey that references tradition and the past but re-imagines the future in a fresh, modern way, with a touch of fantasy.
“This is an experience you’d expect to find on an international stage at a major gallery, and we’re bringing it right to Durban’s front door,” says East Coast Radio House & Garden Show Director, Cairey Baxter-Bruce.
“It is fresh, it is exciting, it is bang on trend and it is shining the spotlight firmly on Durban’s underrated, yet exceptionally talented and diverse art and design scene,” she says.
“Think bold, bright, brave and clashing colourways, prints and textures and strong graphic elements, all combined in a sophisticated, modern way. Picture an eclectic mix of enormous works of art using traditional techniques, paired with modern furniture design, ceramics, fashion and jewellery, and you may have just scratched the surface of what to expect,” explains Baxter-Bruce.
Featured artists and designers have been hand-picked by curators Clark and Shaw for their original work and authentic voice that champions the spirit of the Afrofutura theme and showcases the diversity of what Durban has to offer.
“Expect the unexpected – work by emerging and established artists and designers, ranging in age from 20 to 60 years old, that you’ve never seen or heard of before, with an imaginative, fantasy twist,” explains Clark. “With this exhibition we want to encourage people to see the “new” in Durban and to show them just how dynamic and diverse our city is,” she adds.
“The artists and designers we’re featuring are born to create – they are true artists with a gift for their craft,” says co-curator, Shaw. “Through this exhibition we’re aiming to deliver a knock-out experience to showcase the sense of scale and depth of talent that is around us.”
Both Clark and Shaw conclusively concur that there is nothing boring about Durban and it is that raw energy and excitement that they hope to convey through the work of featured creators at this year’s Discover Durban Design exhibition: Afrofutura.
