Updated | By Di Macpherson & Wikipedia
During her 14-year career with her older brother Richard as The Carpenters,
Karen Carpenter recorded ten albums with many hit songs including (They
Long to Be) Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun".
In celebration of the music of The Carpenters on what would've been
Karen Carpenter's 70th birthday, we're showcasing the best of their
hits. Listen to East Coast Gold from 9-10am today for a special feature.
Karen Carpenter was such a special talent. Imagine what wonderful music she'd have made with Richard if her life had not been cut so short as a result of her eating disorder.
According to Wikipedia, Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa, which was little-known at the time, and was briefly married in the early 1980s.
She died at the age of just 32 from heart failure caused by complications related to her illness.
"Karen's death led to increased visibility and awareness of eating disorders. Her work continues to attract praise, including being listed among Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers of all time," says her Wikipedia entry.
Below are some of The Carpenters most loved songs.
Is this your musical era? Did you know ECR's sister station East Coast Gold plays music from the 60s, 70s and 80s! Listen via the ECR app or here.
