VIDEO: Durban pilot flies SA flag high to promote voting
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? Kind of, it's a patriotic pilot and a humongous SA flag!
Look up! There's something in KZN's sky.
On Wednesday morning, Pilot Reinhardt Hanel soared into the skies above Durban with a massive South African flag. This endeavour aimed to inspire citizens to participate in voting.
With a target in sight, the mission was simple: fly the 400sqm flag from uMhlanga across Durban.

Take a look at how this proud South African gave us an unforgettable sight on voting day:
Some years ago, we built it so that we had it on hand in the event that South Africa was to host a major event or there was a need to celebrate a milestone in our democracy! I think we have reached such a milestone as we celebrate 30 years of democracy.- Pilot Reinhardt Hanel
This feel-good moment has been met with much praise from East Coasters. The super pilot shares that this flag took a whopping two weeks to put together.
It was a stroke of luck that our province got to bask in this glorious moment. “Although we are Cape Town-based, I happen to be here in Durban with the helicopter that we have been using for banner towing over the last few months,” he shared.

Not only was this flight a symbol of unity, but it looked very cool too! Thank you to all of you who exercised your right to vote. Stay tuned for more as we bring you the latest on the elections.
Prof Kealeboga Maphunye, professor of African Politics, joins us on air this morning at 7:38am to discuss what to expect from this year’s election.
