Before an error was detected, the amount was shocking!
The KZN provincial government released a statement with the estimated cost of the damage caused by the #KZNFloods this past month.
Social media was shocked by the amount, especially because the majority of the funds were to be allocated to a facility that was not entirely damaged by the recent floods.

They corrected an error on the list, making the final estimate of the damage a lot less than the above number.
Here's the statement KZN provincial government gave on their Twitter account:
The overall total estimate of the flood damage at this stage is approximately R17 billion.

It must be stressed that the the assessments are still a work in progress.
The error is deeply regretted.

Lives were lost, homes destroyed, and people's livelihoods taken away.
East Coast Radio and Gift of The Givers joined hands and invited corporates and KZN residents to help those that were terribly affected by the floods.
We raised R6-million for those in need and collected so much food, sanitary products, and water.
All thanks to KZN for coming together during this difficult time!
