Diver talks about rare whale behaviour spotted on the KZN South Coast
Seasoned diver John Miller was rewarded with the sighting of a lifetime at Aliwal Shoal, near Scottburgh, when he spotted a humpback whale.
John Miller, of Shark Cage Diving KZN, could not believe his eyes when he was swimming at Aliwal Shoal, which is just 5km offshore of Umkomaas River.
Miller was about to leave when he sighted a mother whale and her calf. But was most intriguing was that the mother was cradling her calf in her mouth.

“It was an amazing experience, I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this before. Once the mother realised I was there, the calf started moving slowly from the mother’s mouth, the mother moved below the calf and gave me a proper stare before they both turned and swam away," Miller explained.
