LISTEN: Global IT outage hits SA

A mass IT outage has hit companies around the world on Friday, including South Africa.

International media reports say the problem's affecting Windows PCs. 

 

Issues have been reported in the United States and the United Kingdom, with banks and broadcasters among those affected and taken offline. 

 

Airlines in the US have had to ground all flights over communication disruptions. 

 

Capitec Bank also appeared to have been experiencing problems on Friday morning.

 

Editor of IT news website MyBroadband Jan Vermeulen explained the reason for the global outage.

"The global outage that affected industries and companies worldwide, we are talking airlines, airports, the London Stock Exchange, was caused by a company called Crowdstrike. 


"They are a cyber security vendor, and it looks like they pushed out an update in the early hours of the morning that caused Windows PCs around the world to error out completely." 

 

Capitec posted on social media that the problem is due to an unexpected issue with an international service provider and that it's currently experiencing nationwide service disruptions. 

 

It assured customers that their card payments and accounts remain secure.
