Social media and community conversations this week have shifted towards concerns that a national shutdown by unions and other civil organisations may be on the cards over the exorbitant fuel prices and a further possible increase. Police are on high alert.

A date has been set for the disciplinary hearing of suspended Stellenbosch University student Theuns du Toit, who was filmed urinating on the belongings of fellow student Babalo Ndwayana at the Huis Marais residence.

South African football club Nsami Mighty Birds scored 41 own goals in one game in their 59-1 loss to Matiyasi, leading to the club being banned for life from the fourth tier of South African football. Matiyasi FC, Shivulani Dangerous Tigers, and Kotoko Happy Boys joined them on the list of banned sides after all four clubs were found to be taking part in match-fixing in the division. Low-cost carrier Ryanair will continue requiring South African passengers to take an Afrikaans test to enter the United Kingdom, despite receiving criticism of "backward profiling". The airline cited a high prevalence of fraudulent South African passports behind the requirement to fill out the test.

To ease the ongoing water issues in Tongaat, Gift of the Givers have installed 15 boreholes in the area. The boreholes, which have been placed at schools and temple yards, yield between 1,500 and 7,200 litres of water per hour.
