However, in a recent turn of events, the 2023 edition of the Comrades Marathon witnessed a shocking revelation, as 25 entrants were disqualified for providing false qualifying information.
According to IOL, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) stated that the 25 athletes will also be suspended from entering the 2024 and 2025 races.
Rowyn James, who is the CMA race director, cracked the whip and issued a warning to any of the athletes who would even think to cheat.
"Runners found to have been cheating in any way, be it via submitting false qualifying details or in the race itself, are tarnishing the reputation of the sport and the Comrades Marathon Association," says Rowyn.
