From boerewors to big business: Oskido opens up about his career
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
From selling boerewors rolls to becoming the 'King of Kwaito', Oskido has changed the game for many DJs - and he is known as a legend in his field for doing just that.
Listen to Oskido's interview with the East Coast Breakfast team:
Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa, known by his fans as Oskido, took Kwaito from the township to mainstream media. Twenty-nine years later, he is still striving to produce his best.
"I must thank God, it has been fantastic and amazing. I've seen people coming onto the scene and seen the music change," he said.
Before becoming the 'King of Kwaito', the 51-year-old used to sell boerewors rolls outside a nightclub in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
Oskido admits he still has boerewors braais when he's around his friends. He is grateful to the DJ that didn't pitch up at the nightclub because for him, the rest became history.
"I am currently in touch with him and helping him with some work which he is doing in the industry. I haven't seen him in 20 years and I met him last year, and have been in touch ever since," said Oskido.
As a single dad, he shared how he balances his life of business and family, and ensures that he is always there for his family.
He has mentored many big-name artists such as Black Coffee, DJ Zinhle, and many more. The recording artist, DJ, record producer, and businessman has currently partnered with a global media institute to provide opportunities for up-and-coming artists.
From becoming the 'King of Kwaito' to leaving a legacy, Oskido is reaching platinum standards in his career, and the East Coast Breakfast team wish him well for the journey ahead.
