Big edible fish in big seas
Updated | By ECR and Vinesh Soogreem
The recent rough seas and windy weather conditions off the KwaZulu-Natal coast haven’t put a damper on fishing.

Anglers in KZN have been catching good fish, including plenty of edibles, despite the challenging weather conditions.
There’ve been reports of big catches off Durban, the KZN North Coast, the South Coast, and the Midlands. These catches include Garrick, Shad, and Kob.
Offshore anglers have caught Tuna, Snoek, and Amberjack, while freshwater reports indicated active Trout and Bass patterns.
Also in this episode of the Angler News South Africa podcast, we’ve got our first spearfishing report, in collaboration with Don Solomon, plus fishing tips from experts to help you improve your strike rate.
Listen to all the details, plus predictions for where the best action will be this weekend, in the KZN Report episode below.
Pictured above: An angler to watch out for in the future, Ledane Pillay (age 7) landed himself a Shad almost as big as himself!
Pictured below: Mike Pereira enjoying the Stillwater season with a Rainbow Trout.
Offshore: Plenty of fish for all. Whether you prefer the fast-paced predators or the strong-pulling bottom fish, there is something for you!
Rock and surf: The shore-based fishing has been the only hot thing in KZN at the moment. Whether you prefer to throw lures or big baits, there have been amazing fish for all facets!
Freshwater: The freshwater has been fishing very well with the trout and bass being the headliners of the freshwater news.
(Pictured directly below: After listening to the Angler News SA reports, Uven Pakkiri was inspired to get back into fishing and landed himself his first Garrick.)
Pictured directly below: Bradley van Zyl showing that we can still get stunning Carp off Albert Falls even when fishing slowed down in this facet.
Meanwhile, in the Expert Series episode, we looked into the mindset necessary for successful fishing. Vinesh Soogreem sat down with John Otto, a seasoned fishing manager with 45 years of experience, to understand what it takes to keep motivation levels alive after hours on the water with no bite.
John (pictured below) talks about the importance of a strong mindset and how it can often outweigh sheer skill in achieving success.
The two also cover strategies for managing different types of anglers and ways beginners can improve their fishing skills, even if they did not grow up fishing. Listen below:
Meanwhile: Ever wonder why some days you catch fish all afternoon, while others leave you with an empty cooler? The secret might be written in the stars (and the tides). In Monday's Expert Series edition of the Angler News SA podcast, fishing expert Dave Irvine discusses how moon phases and tides impact fishing.
Dave offers detailed insights into the optimal times and locations for fishing based on tidal movements and lunar cycles.
