The average cost of medical aid cover in SA is now R2,104 a month

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) shared in their new data released on 31 January 2022 that the average cost of medical aid in South Africa hit R2,104 at the end of September. 

The recorded monthly contribution number is 8.9-million beneficiaries from all the medical schemes in South Africa.

Compared to last year, it went up 2.2%, which was well below the current rate of inflation. 

Regardless of the healthcare expenditure by the varying medical schemes being R141.2-billion, they continued to accumulate money hitting R102.5-billion in reserves.

This makes sense considering the COVID-19 cases in the country among other healthcare issues.

It seems that younger people are not as subsidised as the older generations - they have much more expensive needs in that regard. 

At the end of September, the average age of a medical scheme member was 34. 

So it's important, if you can afford it, to choose the most financially fitting medical aid that will cover everyone you wish to include.
