A Durban high school sent a group of matric pupils home for their hair allegedly being against the code of conduct. According to a source who spoke to IOL, the boys had their hair done for their matric farewell that took place a week before they were sent home from school.
Not so long ago, a grade 8 learner from a school in Uitenhage was barred from attending classes until he trimmed his afro. Read the full story here.
Last year, a school in Gauteng was in hot water after it was accused of policing hair and penalising pupils for their hairstyles.
Remember the #StopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh in 2016, where young girls attending the school were instructed to straighten their hair and not wear dreadlocks or face being barred from writing their exams? This broke out into a huge protest action.
Are schools outdated with their policies on uniforms and hairstyles? Does the code of conduct need a revamp or are these rules important for discipline?

Well, we asked social media if schools should change their policy on hairstyles and this is what we got:
@ECRBreakfast You guys I have no idea what happens when you allow learners hairstyle or color clothes on special days. It changes the learners behaviour patterns and you have unruly learners. If you signed a code of conduct/dress code - follow it! or move you child.

I agree with @kerimiller !! If you want to send your child to a specific school you need to follow the rules.. If you don't like it then don't send your kid to that school. @ECRBreakfast @darrenmaule @SkyTshabalala

@ECRBreakfast it isn't about whether or not the kids like the rules. Rules are rules. You can't pick and choose which ones to obey.
