Prof Tulio makes Time 100 Most Influential People list!

Health professionals receive influential accolade from Time magazine!
It's a proud day for Africa as two of its health professionals have made it onto a list that is very influential.
Prof Tulio de Oliveira and Dr Sikhulile Moyo have been selected for this year’s Time 100 Most Influential People list.
De Oliveira is a professor at Stellenbosch University at the faculty of medicine and health sciences. Dr Moyo is an alumnus at Stellenbosch who obtained his PhD in medical virology in 2016.
Dr Moyo now serves as laboratory Director at the Botswana Harvard Aids Institute Partnership (BHP).

The two scientists are recognised for their hard work in the genomics field and epidemiology.
Their work stretches back to November 2021 where they led a team that was the first to discover the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, which quickly became the dominant variant of the virus globally.

Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers praised the duo for the remarkable achievement.
This acknowledgment by Time magazine proves that Africa’s cutting-edge research has a global impact, and further establishes Prof De Oliveira and Dr Moyo as international leaders in their field- Prof. Wim de Villiers
Stellenbosch University mentioned both researchers are passionate individuals for leading the fight against epidemics from an African perspective.
As well as for highlighting the importance of local and international collaborations for the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, not just in Africa, but across the world.
