Homes, offices and roads became flooded during a heavy downpour earlier today.

Roofs were blown off buildings, walls collapsed and trees were uprooted as gusts of wind accompanied the heavy rain.

The St. Martin's Diocesan Home for Children in Glenwood is among those affected.

The home's Debbie Weppelman says their building was flooded this morning, causing damage to some of the dormitories.

"We are at the bottom of the hill and have literally been flooded. All the floors are wooden and they are completely under water, the roof is also damaged," she said.

The home looks after around 80 children. Weppelman says they've had to make provisions for tonight.

"We've moved all the dry beds upstairs into the top dormitories and the children who have dormitories on the ground level will now be sleeping in the TV lounges and common areas," she said.

The home is appealing for assistance with repair work.

Those who want to assist with repairs and funding can Email [email protected] or contact the home directly on 031 201 1261.
