KZN Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu has this afternoon been in an urgent meeting with senior management at the Northdale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
It comes after a 67-year-old man died in a makeshift base for COVID-19 patients in the parking lot of the hospital.
Sibusiso Khumalo is said to have died of hypoxia.
His daughter, Hlengiwe Khumalo spoke to Newswatch on Tuesday after posting a video if the structure on social media last night. It's sparked outrage over the conditions patients are being kept in.
In a statement, the department says the meeting will form part of an investigation that has been launched, following complaints about the demise of a 67-year-old patient at the hospital's flu clinic.
"Due to strict lockdown regulations meant to contain the spread of COVID – 19, no media personnel will be allowed into the hospital.
However, after the meeting, later this afternoon, the MEC will issue a media statement on the preliminary findings, and provide further details concerning this matter."
