Phased return to universities announced
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, says 33% of students will be allowed to return to universities once Level 3 lockdown is announced.
Nzimande made the remarks at a briefing in Pretoria yesterday where he updated the country on plans to reopen the country's universities. He says they have decided to take a phased approach to opening tertiary institutions.
The minister says they have attached one condition for the return to universities, delivery sites and residences.
"This will happen on condition that students will be safely accommodated and supported in line with health and safety protocols", he said.
Nzimande says the 33% will include final year students.
"We will prioritise those on their final year of studies who will be graduating upon completing the 2020 academic year", he said
"Another group of students who will be allowed to return are post graduates who require laboratory and other technical equipment", Nzimande said.
