Calls for virus protection for workers in retail industry
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) is calling for the protection of retail workers as food and general retailers are identified as the breeding ground for COVID-19.
SACCAWU says they have seen employers not fully complying with the regulations, especially in the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
The union says it receives daily complaints of working conditions under the national lockdown.
SACCAWU's Mike Sikani says while the retailers speak of how well they're doing in protecting the workers, the reality on the ground says otherwise.
He says at least 10 stores have been closed nationally after staff tested positive for COVID-19.
"We call on employers to thoroughly study the regulations from government and compile fully in doing what is expected. We want employers to ensure that the workers who are infected receive decent care," says Sikani.
