Radio Big Walk countdown has officially begun! We can’t wait to see you this
Sunday as we walk Durban’s most beautiful promenade together! We have put
together important information you need to know before then. Check it out.
Are you ready to take part in the Big Walk fun? Here is everything you need to know:
Race pack collection: First up is collecting your exciting goody bag:
The Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk Race Pack Collection is hosted at Suncoast Globe. If you have entered the Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk, you need to bring along your reference number confirmation to collect your goodie bag and race number at race pack collection.
Venue: The Globe – Suncoast
Dates and Times:
- Thursday, 15 June: 10h00 – 19h00;
- Friday, 16 June: 10h00 – 19h00;
- Saturday, 17 June: 10h00 – 14h00
Overall event day details:
- Please ensure you wear the official race number and your Big Walk T-shirt, if you forgot your race number at home, please proceed to info immediately. You will not be allowed in the finish area without your race number.
- Please obey all marshals and traffic officials on route – they are there to ensure your safety.
- No running please, this is a walking event.
- There are toilets on the route. These are located at the water stations.
- Please throw all empty sachets in the bins provided at the water stations.
How do walkers get to the start and back?
The transport solution has been designed to ensure that walkers get to the start as easily as possible. The bus transport service is available free of charge to all registered walkers of the Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk.
Please note: To access the free bus service, you have to wear your Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk race number and T-shirt on the day. Special consideration will be given to walkers who are entered for earlier starts. To avoid delays, bring exact cash on-hand for parking on the day.
Parking facilities are available. Buses will rotate between People’s Park and uShaka Marine World from 05:30 until 10:30. You can catch a bus from the finish area to the start area.
We aim to get all walkers to the start with the least delay, so please arrive on time to avoid delay and disappointment. Also pay special attention to the time schedule below as well as the first and last bus times as applicable to each start.
Option 1: Park at Suncoast (Parking area P2
only)
There is free parking available at Suncoast. Please
note that parking is limited and is on a first come, first served basis and
subject to availability.
Option 2: Park at the finish (Parking areas P1
and P2)
Park at the designated parking areas at Moses Mabhida
Stadium, then catch a bus to uShaka Marine World, and start your walk to the
finish area. Please note the return bus service has a time limit. Parking
tickets will be available for purchase only on the morning of the event, at the
designated parking locations. Tickets for parking areas P1 and P2 cost R30.
Option 3: Park at the start (Parking areas P3
and P4)
Park at the start (uShaka Marine World) and start your
walk to the finish area, and then catch a bus back to uShaka Marine World after
you finish your walk. Parking tickets will be available for purchase only
on the morning of the event, at the designated parking locations. Tickets for
parking areas P1 and P2 cost R30.
Road Closures
Durban Metro Police will close several roads. Make sure you note these so that your commute to the event is smooth and hassle-free. You will need to plan your drive to avoid these roads.
From 04:30 until 12:00
- Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue (south bound) from Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road to Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road.
- Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue (north bound) from Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road to Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road.
From 05:30 until ± 12:00
- Snell Parade from Athlone Drive to Battery Beach Road.
- Athlone Drive between Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Ave and Snell Parade.
- M4 (north bound) offramp to Athlone Drive.
- M4 (south bound) offramp to Athlone Drive.
- Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue (south bound) two lanes from Athlone. Drive to Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road – All vehicles to go west upon Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road.
- Battery Beach Road / Snell Parade [at the traffic circle] – Controlled access to the parking at the Mustering Fields.
We will be hosting a competition where you could stand a chance of winning your share of R10 000 at The Big Walk! This is how:
- Wear your Suncoast East Coast Radio Big Walk T-shirt on Sunday.
- Snap a picture of you looking cute in your Big Walk T-shirt while on route
- Share the snap on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, and tag East Coast Radio using the hashtag #SuncoastECRBigWalk
Winners will be announced live at the finish line!
We are looking forward to hosting all walkers at the event this Sunday. Just a reminder to all our walkers is that The Big Walk is a family event, therefore there is no need for sanctioning, and the event adheres to all protocols for big events, including:
- Safety
- Policing
- Infrastructure
- Medical availability
The safety and well-being of our walkers are our highest priority.
