Impi Live: Shaping KZN’s Music and Sports Event Scene

Impi Live, co-founded by Andrew van Rensburg and Stu Berry, is a KwaZulu-Natal-based events company that has firmly established itself as a leader in live music, sporting events, and entertainment. The company’s portfolio includes a diverse range of events, from mountain biking and trail running to major music festivals like Splashy Fen.

The company’s story began when Stu and a friend decided to organise their own mountain biking event while at university. This success laid the groundwork for Impi Live’s expansion into live music and festivals. In 2010, the company hosted its first music concert at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, featuring Johnny Clegg, marking the start of a diverse event portfolio, including Splashy Fen and Music at the Lake.

In 2016, Impi Live took over the operations of Splashy Fen, South Africa’s longest-running music festival, and has since increased its attendance to around 10,000 visitors each year. Alongside Splashy Fen, the company has launched events like iMfolozi Outrun and Music at the Lake, contributing to the cultural and entertainment landscape of KZN.

Impi Live's mission is to give people the chance to reconnect with nature, family, and friends, providing a refreshing break from everyday life. This is especially evident at events like Splashy Fen, where visitors can enjoy great music in the beautiful KZN outdoors.

The company continues to innovate in the live events space, adapting to new trends and ensuring each event is sustainable and engaging for the community. Impi Live also benefits from strong international connections, with Stu Berry’s experience in rugby opening doors to potential collaborations with global markets, which can bring even more opportunities to KZN.

With over 400,000 attendees across its events to date—enough to fill Kings Park Stadium ten times—Impi Live is now recognised as a key player in KZN’s entertainment and tourism sectors. Looking forward, the company continues to focus on enhancing the festival experience by offering music, food, drink, and immersive elements that ensure its events remain on the must-attend list for both locals and visitors alike.
