Breast Cancer - How to check for lumps, where to get help
Updated | By Keri Miller
This week East Coast Breakfast is going pink in solidarity with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
We had Robyn Briggs from CANSA come to chat to the Breakfast Show, and one of the biggest things that stood out (besides the fact that men can get breast cancer, too) was that the best prevention is early detection.
It is as easy as setting up an appointment with your family doctor. But what if you, like me, don’t have medical aid? The R400 for a consultation is too much for a lot of us.
So, we chatted to CANSA and found out that they do everything from counseling to screening from their offices, and at a fraction of the cost.

Screenings:
Pap Smear – R180
Clinical Breast Exam – R80
PSA – R120 (blood test for prostate screening for men over 40)
Mole Mapping – R100 for 15 minutes
Support:
Counseling in home or at their office
Support groups
Stoma clinics
Wigs
Knitted knockers (for women who have had a mastectomy)
Breast prosthesis – R1200 to R1800
Care Home – a home away from home for patients receiving treatment. Mkuhla takes patients to and from treatment, provides them with three meals a day, and offers them support groups and arts and crafts.
Also, CANSA have a mobile clinic that can come out to do screenings in your area or you can book an appointment to see one of their wonderful nurses, Vanitha or Busi.
