Gravity the Movie
Updated | By Darren Maule
Ever since we first broke out of our atmosphere and ventured into Outer Space – a brand new fear has manifest in the psyche of man, or rather, in the subconscious, of man. That fear is: what if I made it into Outer Space but I couldn’t make it back!?
This little fear has been niggling in the back of human consciousness – well ever since 1969 or since Uri Gargain circumnavigated Planet Earth. That fear – and it is a very real fear – has up until now not really been able to translate onto screen nor has the average human being had the opportunity to go into Outer Space and feel that fear manifest until now with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the leading roles of Gravity.
Of course now, it has been tried before what with the true story of Apollo 13 – but with that there was always the sense that they were going to make it back because the history books told us that they did! So although we kind of felt for a while that they felt more experienced or that they might possibly not make it back home to Earth – this wasn’t a reality – you just knew that they were going to make it back.
And now for the first time we have a movie that brings this particular fear to the fore 100%. Interestingly enough mixed with the very human drama of being one person alive in Outer Space with only a disconnected voice to communicate to you and then also a huge mass of science fiction, huge budget, crap special effects and explosions, wonderful soundless out of space explosions as well which make the prospect of being out there in that void even more frightening.
If there is anything that the movie GRAVITY does is it brings this whole fear 100% manifest to you so you can experience it for yourself. In order to make a movie like this, you need the special effects which we now have post Avatar in the movie making world, but you also need the brilliant performances from A list actors such as George Clooney and Sandra Bullock – who took the risk on this movie and have absolutely nailed it.

George Clooney was a no brainier as a casting choice but many people were not convinced that Sandra Bullock could hold her own outside of an ensemble cast, but I was never in doubt. She has spent the last few years genre hopping so for me it was inevitable that she would land here. Look at her journey...
