Bafana won't go into defensive mode - Masango
Updated | By Gareth Jenkinson
Bafana Bafana midfielder Mandla Masango said South Africa won't rest on their laurels when they take on Angola in the second leg World Cup qualifier in Durban on Tuesday night.
Bafana Bafana won the first leg clash 3-1 in Benguela on Friday night, giving them a two goal advantage going into tonight's match.
South Africa could adopt a conservative approach and 'park the bus' defensively, but Masango said they plan to score some goals at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
"As much as they need to score, we also need to score. In order for us to win we need to go out there and score, not only defend. But again, defence is a big part of the game, we need to make sure we don't concede any goals and try be compact as possible while trying to hit them back on the counter as well," Masango said ahead of the match.
"There is always room for improvement. In every game we play, we play to win, compete to win and try to score as many goals as we can. But if the man upstairs decides that today it's going to be two or three, its just going to be like that. It's going to be a tough encounter, even though we have the 2-goal advantage. We can't take that for granted because football is a funny game, anything is possible," the midfielder added.
Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba made three changes to his side for the clash. Thulani Hlatshwayo replaces the injured Anele Ngcongca, Dean Furman is in for Andile Jali, who was released from the squad after he was red-carded on Friday and Mpho Makola replaces Thulani Serero.
Even before the changes were made, Masango believed there was enough depth in the squad to remain competitive.
"I think we have more than enough players. I think South Africa has 500 players or more. So I think in the absence of players like Jali, it's a chance for other players to get an opportunity to showcase their talent and help the team going forward," Masango said.
Kickoff is at 19h00 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
