EThekwini Municipality says while an environmental impact assessment is underway at the Cornubia housing project, they are also set for phase two of the development, due to begin next year.

Phase one of the project north of Durban will provide around 3000 semi-detached units to those who earn between zero and R15 000 a month.

The head of Human Settlements for the municipality Beryl Mphakathi says they want to have those who qualify moving in by the end of the year.

Mphakathi says they are also figuring out what the best way is to relocate people to new surroundings.

"You're relocating people that are living in informal settlements and they've adapted to that way of living. So, the challenge for us has been how quick do we link with the people that we've brought into Cornubia to livelihood.

"We've capitalised on the private investors, the private developers and the partnership that we have with Tongaat Hulett to quickly link the economic opportunities with the skills of the people that we've relocated to Cornubia," she said.
