The situation at UKZN's Westville campus remains tense, as police keep guard outside all entrances to Oval residence - across the road from the Admin Block.
The situation has calmed down following chaotic scenes there earlier - as police used stun grenades, teargas and rubber bullets to disperse students who had been throwing rocks and glass bottles down from the multi-storey Oval residence.
In a well-orchestrated move, the students carried beer bottles in a shopping trolley, and used a fire extinguisher to create a smoke screen.

A short while later, students started leaving the residence in small groups - seemingly making their way home with books and bags in hand.
Meanwhile, motorists are slowly weaving their way through the campus roads which have been left strewn with broken bottles and rocks following the earlier protests.
Together with UKZN's Howard College and Pietermartizburg campus, the academic programme has been disrupted during more than three weeks of unrest - with ongoing calls for free and quality education.
