President Zuma delivered a memorial lecture yesterday at Tambo's grave site at Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville, Ekurhuleni east of Johannesburg.

Speaking at the event, the president said Tambo was 'loyal and wanted to see people united'.

Tambo, who co-founded the ANC Youth League in 1944, spent over 30 years in exile and is the longest-serving president of the ruling party.

Newswatch has compiled five of the icon's most memorable quotes. See them here.

"The fight for freedom must go on until it is won; until our country is free and happy and peaceful as part of the community of man, we cannot rest."

"I had other plans for my life. I wanted to be a minister of the Anglican church with Bishop Clayton. After we married, I was going to train for the ministry in Cape Town. But God had other plans for me. Gods plan was for me to fight in the political liberation for my people."

"We have a vision of South Africa in which black and white shall live and work together as equals in conditions of peace and prosperity."

“Be careful, be cautious, do not rush into negotiations ... be careful what you give away now, you may wish you had not done so should in future the balance of forces turn in your favour.”

"We are not fighting against people, we are fighting against a system."
