A multitude marches to Luthuli House

Thousands of students in Johannesburg have marched on the ANC's national headquarters in the city's CBD to hand over a memorandum to the ruling party's leaders.

It is part of the nationwide protests at higher learning institutions against tuition fee hikes.

Earlier, former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini demanded Gwede Mantashe, who was flanked by Cosatu President Sdumo Dlamini and State Security Minister, David Mahlobo to come down to the students to address them after Mantashe initially refused to move from the entrance of Luthuli House.

"The Secretary-General of the ANC, a communist, a mineworker, a parent will humble himself and come down here. Amandla!" he told students.

One of the student leaders read out the memorandum the students drafted.

"This country's future depends on the urgent prioritisation of universal access to quality tertiary education. We therefore demand the following - 1. The ANC government must immediately release the funds to ensure a 0% fee increase for 2015/16 financial year.

"2. The ANC government must urgently realise free quality higher education," she said.

There were reports Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was on her way to join the students.

Tomorrow, thousands more students are expected to gather at the Union Buildings where President Jacob Zuma is expected to address them.

Dlamini told the students at Luthuli House to go to the union buildings. He's urged bus companies as well as other organisations to offer their service in providing transport, food and other necessaries for tomorrow.
